Hydrochloric acid (cold) at a concentration of 37% is a colourless liquid with a characteristic odour. It is mainly used in laboratories and industry for pH control, impurity removal and water treatment. In the chemical industry it serves as a raw material for the production of chlorides and other chemical compounds. Precautions must be taken when handling it as it is corrosive and can cause burns.
