Phosphorus is a highly reactive element and never occurs in nature in its pure form. Instead, it occurs in various compounds such as phosphates and phosphites. Phosphorus exists in several allotropic forms, the most common of which are white phosphorus and red phosphorus. Elemental phosphorus is also used in the production of pesticides, fertilizers and semiconductors and is also used in the production of phosphoric acid, which is used in the manufacture of soft drinks.
