Helium is a chemical element with atomic number 2 in the periodic table of elements. It is a colourless, non-toxic, odourless, tasteless and chemically inert gas that is the second lightest element in the universe and the second most abundant element after hydrogen. It has many uses, especially in balloons, airships and other applications where its low density, low boiling point and durability are useful. It is also used to make lasers and superconducting materials and for cryogenic applications.
