Sodium superoxide is a yellowish solid that is highly reactive and unstable, decomposing rapidly in air to release oxygen gas and form sodium peroxide. Sodium superoxide is typically used as a source of oxygen in emergency oxygen generators or as a source of oxygen for chemical oxygen generators in submarines or spacecraft. It is also used in the production of other oxygen-containing compounds and in the preparation of catalysts for chemical reactions.
