Seals for Demanding Pressure and Temperature Conditions

Spiral-wound gaskets are the standard for flange joints with higher requirements for pressure, temperature, or resistance to aggressive media. Alternating layers of metal tape and graphite filler ensure excellent flexibility and sealing even with fluctuating operating conditions. The POWERgasket SWG-IOR series is equipped with both an inner and outer ring – the outer ring centers the gasket during installation and protects the filler from damage, while the inner ring prevents the filler from bulging into the flow section. The result is easy installation and high blowout resistance up to 320 bar.

Industries and Typical Applications

Spiral wound gaskets we supply:

  • POWERgasket SWG-IOR 316L/graphite/316L – inner and outer ring made of stainless steel 316L; graphite filler; fully corrosion-resistant design for chemically demanding environments
  • POWERgasket SWG-IOR 316L/graphite/CS – inner ring made of stainless steel 316L, outer ring made of carbon steel; a more economical option for standard industrial applications
  • Both designs available from European and Chinese sources – depending on certification requirements, delivery time, or price
  • In stock – online overview of stock availability with filtering options (size, material, design)

We will help you choose the right design for your pressure, medium, and flange standard.

What is the difference between the 316L/graphite/316L and 316L/graphite/CS designs?

Both types have the same spiral made of stainless steel 316L and graphite filler – they differ only in the material of the outer ring. The 316L/graphite/316L design has a fully stainless steel outer ring, making it more resistant to corrosion and suitable for chemically aggressive environments or hygienic applications. The 316L/graphite/CS design uses a carbon steel outer ring – it is more cost-effective and fully adequate for standard industrial flanges where the outer ring is not in direct contact with the medium.

Why do SWG-IOR gaskets have both an inner and outer ring?

The outer ring (OR – outer ring) centers the gasket in the flange groove during installation and protects the spiral from mechanical damage during bolt tightening. The inner ring (IR – inner ring) prevents the graphite filler from bulging into the flow cross-section of the pipe, which is especially important for high-pressure media or applications sensitive to contamination. The combination of both rings (IOR type) is recommended for most industrial flanges and eliminates the most common installation errors.

What pressure and temperature can spiral wound gaskets be used for?

POWERgasket SWG-IOR gaskets can withstand pressures up to 320 bar. The temperature range depends on the filler material – graphite filler allows use up to approximately +550 °C (in oxidizing atmosphere up to +450 °C). For applications requiring a different temperature or chemical range, designs with PTFE or mica filler are available – please contact us with your specifications.

Are spiral wound gaskets in stock?

Yes. We keep the most common sizes and material combinations in stock. An online overview of stock availability is available on the website with filtering options by diameter, thickness, material, and design. Non-standard sizes or special material combinations are supplied on request – please contact us with your desired specifications.
