In chemistry, an alcohol is an organic compound that contains a hydroxyl functional group attached to an aliphatic carbon chain. Alcohols are one of the most widely used groups of organic compounds and have a variety of uses in industry, medicine and cosmetics. They have distinctive physical and chemical properties such as high boiling point, solubility in water and the ability to react with acids to form esters or with alkali metals to form alcoholates.
