DEC, Carbonic Ether, Carbonic Acid Diethyl Ester
Diethyl carbonate (DEC) is an organic chemical compound that belongs to the ester group. It is a clear, colourless liquid with a slight odour of ether. It is used as a solvent, a reagent in organic synthesis and as a blowing agent in the manufacture of polyurethane foams. It is also used as a safe alternative to dimethyl carbonate in lithium ion batteries. DEC is often used as a replacement for ethyl acetate and acetone because it has similar dissolving properties but is less toxic and more environmentally friendly.
