Coal tar oil is a by-product of coke production. It is a dark, viscous liquid consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons and other chemicals such as phenols and anilines. It is mainly used as a raw material for the chemical industry, where it is further processed into a wide range of products such as creosote, naphthalene and anthracene. It is also used as a binder in the manufacture of paving and roofing materials and as a source of fuel for industrial boilers and furnaces.
