Toxaphene is a synthetic pesticide that has been widely used in agriculture and to control pests in the environment. First produced in the 1940s, it was widely used until the 1980s. Toxaphene is a mixture of more than 700 individual compounds, most of which are toxic and persistent in the environment. Its use is banned in most countries due to concerns about its persistence, toxicity and potential for bioaccumulation in wildlife and the food chain.
