Heavy water is a form of water that contains a higher concentration of the isotope deuterium than normal water. Heavy water has a number of important properties and uses. It is used as a moderator and coolant in nuclear reactors because it slows down neutrons and helps maintain the reaction. In addition, heavy water is used as a solvent in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, a technique used to study the structure and properties of molecules.
